Dear Marketer
One fine morning about five
weeks ago I decided to run a small test. I had several websites
promoting affiliate products and several others promoting CPA products
(Just like many of you I am sure). Some of these sites were ranking
high and receiving lots of traffic. But, sadly, they were hardly
bringing in any sales/leads. I was doing what I always used to do:
write product reviews and recommend the product with a strong call to
action. But the results were too discouraging. I was only making pocket
change. This was frustrating...
That’s when I decided to run
this test. I made a small change to the way I told my visitors to visit
the vendor site through my link.
The Change is So Silly that I Laughed at
Myself for not Thinking About it Earlier
It was a CPA site that was
promoting a free trial of a product. The user had to sign up for the
free trial with his credit card information and pay for the shipping
(Typical CPA offer). What I did was, instead of sending the visitor
directly to the vendor's page through my affiliate link, I hid the link
and offered the visitor a coupon code and a form where he can use the
coupon code. That’s it.
The Result: 6800% increase
leads signup

The coupon form looks like this:
As you can see, it gives a
coupon code, and a place to enter the code. That's it. (blacked out
text is the affiliate offer)
I know the technique sounds
very simple but it gives explosive results. And it works every time. I
will tell you the exact reasons why it works.
In his masterpiece work
"Triggers", Joseph Sugarman reveals and discusses 30 different triggers
that affect a prospect subconsciously during purchasing process. The
reason why this simple technique worked so well is because it utilizes
quite a number of these triggers. Some of them are:
- Create Greed: By using this technique
the visitor thinks he is getting a deal. People like to get more for
the same money. Or they like to pay less for the same item. Using a
coupon code did the trick
- Build Exclusivity: People like to be
unique and they like to get unique deals. By using this technique, the
visitor gets the impression that he is getting something that no one
else is.
- Get them Involved: Unlike clicking a
link, copying a coupon code and pasting it and hitting the button gets
the visitor involved and active in the buying process, and this
increases the chances of getting a sale
- Uncover Curiosity: When you hide the
link and offer coupon code, or hide the code behind a teaser, the
visitor gets curious and wants to see what’s behind it, and that gets
him/her to click on the link
This technique also works with
regular affiliate products. Most products mention somewhere in the
sales letter that there is a discount. Or they mention that this is a
special introductory price and it will increase later. You can
capitalize on that by using coupon codes. Instead of sending the
visitor directly through a link, give them a coupon code mentioning
that this will give them a discount (10% 20% or whatever), have them
use the coupon code somewhere in your site and redirect them to the
vendor's site after the user pastes the correct coupon code and clicks
on the button. Your conversions will increase guaranteed!
I know what you are thinking
now...
"The technique sounds cool, but how in the
world am I going to create coupon codes and coupon forms?!? I am not a
programmer!"
Well, don’t worry. Because I
have got a complete solution to implement this strategy. I have a
special wordpress plugin that can do this with the click of a button.
The answer is WpCouponSoft.
WpCouponSoft allows you to create three different
kinds of coupon codes:
- Action Coupons: This is a textbox with a
button. When the visitor enters the coupon code that you provide, and
clicks on the button, the plugin verifies if the coupon code is valid
and then accordingly redirects to the link you specify. This is the
type of coupon form that I initially tested with the CPA site and
achieved the results I mentioned earlier. (Screenshot above)
- Peel Teasers: This will attract more clicks to the
vendor's site (or your own discount page) than anything else you have
ever tried before. This shows a very attractive peel in your website.
The peel teases your visitor to click on it. Using special javascript
code, the peel appears as if it is almost about to peel, therefore
increasing the CTR. When the visitor clicks on the peel, it reveals the
code but also opens the vendors site in a new tab. Screenshot of the
Peel Teaser:

- Magazine Coupons:
Remember the coupon vouchers you used to cut out from magazines and
redeem it in stores. This feature of WpCouponSoft allows you to place
something similar in your website. This is another feature of
WpCouponSoft that has been proven to work very well in drawing clicks.
The mouse cursor turns into a scissor as you hover over the coupon code
giving your visitors the feel that they are really cutting a coupon
voucher, although once they click they are redirected to the link you
specify. Screenshot of the Magazine Coupon:

The best thing is, you dont
have to mess around with any code. You can place them anywhere in your
blog using [shortcodes]
In addition, WpCouponSoft also
has the following killer features:

code is more effective
- Highly customizable: From appearance to
call to action text, everything can be customized

Coupon Codes can give you a
huge boost in your business because it uses a very important psychological factor: Involvement
When a person uses a coupon
code to get a discount, he is not relying on your words that there is a
discount. He himself used the coupon code and therefore he takes the
discount more seriously. Coupon codes make the prospect more committed
to the product and this increases your chances of getting a sale.
Another important advantage of
using coupon code is scarcity. Ask any successful marketer what is the
best way to make a prospect hit the order button and buy as quickly as
possible. I am sure he will answer scarcity. Scarcity is a very
powerful sales trigger. With coupon codes, instead of saying "only 100
copies will be sold" or "after 48 hours the doors will close", you will
be able to say "the coupon code will work for the first 100 lucky
buyers" or "the coupon code becomes invalid after 48 hours". This way
the prospect is less skeptic about your scarcity statement and it has
been proven that the sales increase exponentially.
What if I am not an affiliate marketer? I
only sell my own products.
Don’t worry,There are other
things you can do with coupon codes:
- Explode Your List Size: Most people
don’t take free stuff seriously, and the list build using a free
product is not very responsive. You can get rid of this problem by
using this trick: Instead of sending a prospect directly to a squeeze
page where you collect email address and give away a free resource, why
not send them to a salespage selling the same "free resource" for a
price. Then let them use the coupon code to access the squeeze page.
You list will grow astronomically. Not only will people take your "free
resource" more seriously (knowing that it is actually a paid product),
they will also be more responsive to your future offers.
- Build an army of loyal affiliates:
Imagine giving a better discount to some of your top affiliates. Now
you can do that with WP Coupon Soft. Not only that, you can keep the
coupon code with his name (like "mikespecial" if Mike is your top
affiliate). This will increase the responsiveness of his list to your
product.
- Unleash the full power of Email Marketing:
When you send out an email promo to your list, have them use a coupon
code in your salespage to get a special, unique discount that no one
else will get. And tell them to keep it a secret. Your conversions will
go through the roof, guaranteed!
- Ramp Up Your Backend Sales: In your
current product, include a coupon code so that the customer can buy
your other products at a discount...And watch as the backend shelves
get emptied faster than it ever did before
